Prompt No. 23

Last Week’s Story

Last week’s prompt included a librarian, and ended up with pirates. Because I like both. Well, I enjoy the company of librarians, but I doubt I will ever encounter a Caribbean pirate, nor would I like their company very much. And yet, I’m fascinated by them. I’ve read several books about piracy and pirates, and that trilogy of pirate adventures is still tickling the back of my brain. And while historic pirates did not actually force anyone to “walk the plank”, they certainly did have plenty of painful and horrific ways to dispatch prisoners.

Eugh.

Anyway. As always, I think “The New Librarian” has potential.

This Week’s Prompt

I rolled a 2 on my D4 this week, which means drawing from the Fantasy deck. Here’s the prompt:

A barbarian wants to sabotage an enemy with a merfolk potion, but one way or another, it will be their last adventure.

…which is cool. I’ve always wanted to write about a barbarian. I’ll have to give some thought to what “merfolk potion” might mean. Otherwise, this prompt seems pretty straightforward. I even included an image of a mermaid as this week’s featured image to provide inspiration. Are there merfolk in my barbarian’s fantasy world? Or is it just a manatee who got some extremely expensive plastic surgery? The world may never know.

This Week’s Recommendation

Film poster for the movie Sinners.

This week’s recommendation is the movie Sinners, currently in theaters but apparently it will be streaming on Amazon Prime starting on June 3. I wasn’t all that interested in this movie going on, because I knew it included vampires, and vampires are a hard sell for me. However, this film handled them very well.

One highlight is definitely Michael B. Jordan’s performance, for which he deserves an Oscar, in my opinion.

At any rate. See this movie! It’s flippin’ fantastic!

In Other News

Yesterday, I attended the Sacramento Book Festival. This was the second year it’s happened, though last year it was just a few booths at the farmers’ market. This year, they had a dedicated venue, and from I understand they severely underestimated the number of attendees they had. So even though it was 100+ degrees in the city yesterday, the people came out to talk about books, sell books, buy books, trade books, meet with authors, and so on. I did exactly that (though I didn’t sell any books). I met with some friends, attended some panels, bought some books, hobnobbed with the literary elite of Sacramento, and more. I am eagerly looking forward to next year, and I may even volunteer!

In Closing

That’s all for this week. As always, be safe, be kind, and have fun.
