Holidailies 2025

My Favorite Movies of 2025

I have a pretty bad tension headache at the moment so I don’t have much brainspace for content, so I figured I’d just tell you about the movies I really enjoyed this past year. I mean, I’ve seen plenty of movies this year, mostly on streaming services, mostly forgettable horror. For example, last night I watched a real turkey called Never Blink on Amazon Prime. It had an intriguing premise, but that’s it. It features women doctors who wear low cut outfits and high heels, fully in defiance of practicality, and has a plot that is utterly incoherent. Something about monsters and our eleven-dimensional brains. Who knows? I kept watching it for some reason, but lord it wasn’t good.

But there are three movies I’ve seen this year that really stood out for me. Granted, I haven’t seen Wicked: For Good yet, and I hope to at some point over the holidays. But heck, here are the three I really enjoyed so far:

Sinners

I’m not normally a fan of vampire movies, because I’m of the firm opinion that there’s nothing interesting left to be done with vampires, but this one really shone. And it wasn’t because of the vampires. It was because of how the characters created a solid community of partnership and strength and love and music… and how the vampires stripped that away in one night. In that way it’s a solid critique of colonialism, but there was more: The vampires really were scary, and Michael B. Jordan is simply amazing in his dual role. If he doesn’t get an Oscar this year, then we know the Academy is well and truly correupt.

Superman

I am not a comic book reader, and superhero movies tend to leave me cold. Tend to. I loved Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie and Superman II back in the day, with Christopher Reeve. Those movies were SO GOOD at portraying the humanity and the superness of Superman. No Superman movie since then has captured those elements of Superman that really make him super… Until James Gunn came along. In this movie, which is thankfully NOT an origin story, Superman is not just a metahuman with superpowers. He’s kind, generous, friendly, and loving. I loved it, and the movie really did make me want to be a better person. This movie may not win any awards, but personally I don’t care. It’s just a good movie.

K-Pop Demon Hunters

Quite frankly, if you saw this film streaming on Netflix and did not like it, then you have no soul. I’m sorry, that’s just science. The music and the scenes where the heroes are fighting demons are great, of course, but incidental to a story about learning to accept oneself, about loving yourself, the power of friendship, and more. The characters are engaging and even the villains of the piece get a strong story. Go forth and watch this movie, and try to recapture what 2025 has stolen from your soul.

That’s it!

As I mentioned, I saw a lot of movies this year, and while most of them were decent, these three were really the ones that stood out. Happy Holidailies!
