2025 Commitment, The Story Engine, Writing

Prompt Number FIve

Results from last week’s prompt and a reading note:

My story this past week, based on last week’s prompt, was called “The Labyrinth at the End of the World”, which I think is a brilliant title, and I like the resulting story very much. It’s fantasy, of course, possibly fantasy-horror, and will need revisions before I do anything with it, but it definitely has potential.

And on another note, would you believe that I, a genre writer, have never read The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle? Well, I haven’t. I am rectifying that oversight this coming week.

This week’s prompt:

As a late birthday gift, my wife got me these:

Three boxes of Story Engine expansion cards.
Three boxes of Story Engine expansion decks!

In case you can’t read them or don’t want to, they are:

  • Written in Dragonfire (fantasy expansion);
  • Written in the Light of Strange Worlds (science fiction expansion); and,
  • Written in Ash and Bone (horror expansion).

There’s no special trick to these expansion decks; they work just like the regular Story Engine deck. So just for the fun of it, I’m going to draw from the Science Fiction deck this morning for my next 2025 Committment prompt. I’ve written plenty of fantasy and horror in my day, but hardly any science fiction. And so here is this week’s prompt:

Stroy Engine prompt for the week of January 26
Read along the bottom!!

A poor chrononaut wants to make a weapon out of a black hole, but it will mean joining the enemy.

I don’t know at the moment how this story will play out. I may actually (gasp) outline this one before writing it!

Anyway. Have a splendid week, all. Happy typing!
