2025 Commitment, The Story Engine, Writing

Prompt No. 4

I finished “The Matter of the Dodo” earlier this morning. It ended up being about a soldier whose orders conflict with the mission of an isolated and mysterious convent. I had a blast writing it, and I think it will be fun to revise.

This week’s prompt is a little more mysterious:

A draw of 4 cards from The Story Engine.
What I drew for Prompt Number Four.

Reading across the bottom, it reads:

A beast wants to draw attention to a ghostly prison, but they will have to stop living a lie.

Typically when I think “beast”, I think of the Beast from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, as I’m sure most of us who lived in the mid- to late-90s do. In this story, I may use a cat, because I am surrounded by cats at all times, and I often refer to them as beasts. See the confused cat image above, and possibly refer to the early Monty Python sketch, “Confuse a Cat”.

We’ll see what happens.

In other news, I finished reading Hild, a novel about an extraordinary young woman in 700s Britain. She’s surrounded by court intrigue, war, and deep family dynamics, and I really enjoyed it. It makes me think I could write historical fiction of my own. Perhaps after I’ve finished writing all my other proejcts. I have a book entitled Once Upon a Time it was Now, which is about writing historical fiction, and perhaps I will turn to that one.

And in yet other news, I have carefully avoided all mention of tomorrow’s inauguration of Donald Trump (that’s the only mention I’ll make), becauase tomorrow is also when our nation celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday. We should celebrate the birth and contribution of the man who strove to make our nation great, and not the inauguration of a man who actively did his best to destroy our nation from the inside, and who is even more determined to do so this time around.

Be well, friends.
