You know who you are

You. Yeah, you. The one doing the shouting. Listen up.

Yes, Terri Schiavo died today. It’s a tragic event; the loss of anyone’s life is tragic, no matter which side of the fence you are on. But know this: everyone, on both sides of the debate, were trying to do what they thought was the right thing. Her husband wanted her to die with dignity, in accordance with her wishes; her parents wanted her to stay alive in the hopes of a miracle.

Neither side was evil. Got that? Neither one. Your unwillingness to accept that someone else besides you could have a sense of right or wrong will not change the fact that they did. Just because you thought Steve was a money-grubbing evil bastard from Hell or that her parents and Jeb Bush were radical Christian fanatics without a hint of reason doesn’t change the fact that all of them wanted to do the right thing.

I’ll tell you what’s destroying our country. It’s not the “gay agenda” (whatever the hell that is); it’s not the “neo-conservative plan for world domination”; it’s not the liberal/conservative media (each side invariably accuses the media of being controlled by the other). It’s idiots like you who are so full of pride, so full of the notion that you know better than God what God wants for humanity, that you can’t even consider for just a moment that perhaps you might be wrong after all, and the other side might be right. We were never promised easy answers; trying to force what you think is an easy answer onto a complex problem is only going to make the problem worse.

There’s a reason why pride is considered by many to be the greatest sin. More harm than we can ever quantify has been done by fools who charged blindly forward, never once stopping to consider whether they might be wrong.

Now, shut the hell up, all of you. You’re making me sick.
