Serenity – Uncle Orson Reviews Everything

Orson Scott Card says that Serenity is the best science fiction movie ever. How much more endorsement do you need? Despite his, uh, somewhat wacky political ideas (the Democrats are equivalent to the Nazi party? What the hell have you been smoking?), the man does know quality storytelling.

Miers & Microsoft

Over on slingshot.org: Miers & Microsoft

Apparently, Miers once argued — successfully — that Microsoft customers who purchased faulty products that damaged their data were not injured in any way. This was back in 1995, when MS-DOS 6.0 caused some data compression errors. Microsoft offered an upgrade, MS-DOS 6.2, for $9.95. Customers who experienced data loss because of the problems wanted MS to offer the upgrade for free (which would have made sense to me), but Miers successfully argued in favor of the corporation.

This is no indication of where Miers would stand on issues such as abortion, civil rights, etc. (if she runs true to the Bush heritage, we won’t find out any of that until she’s on the bench), and there may be facts of the case of which I’m not aware, but it does tell me that she’s more likely to side with the corporation instead of the consumer; in my opinion, this is inverse to what our priorities as a nation should be.

Writing update

So, 769 words yesterday on The Terassic Cycle outline. It’s a lot more complex than I had really thought about at first and I’ve been spending much of this time paring down on some of the plots and themes to make everything consistent and believable. I’ve had to drop a number of the cooler ideas because they didn’t make sense in context.

Also: ponderations on “Hollow”, but no words written. Also some ponderations on “The Divergents”, which is a story that won’t leave me alone.

I was sick yesterday so I worked at home, and had a surprising amount of downtime. I spent much of that time revamping my personal home page at mossroot.com. I suppose I could have spent that time writing, but this revamp has been a long time coming.
